Is it Christmas? No, but here are some shiny new pulleys from NST. This is a prototype set built special just for the 3RZ powered Drift Yaris.
Mmm old pulleys fizz can black spray paint with rust showing through.
FIrst things first, take off the belt.
To do this loosen then alternator tensioner. There are two bolts that have to be undone for this, the slide bolt that T’s into the assembly and the tension rod bolt. You can remove both of the bolts completely, but don’t have to; just enough to swing the alternator up and remove the belt.
With the belt out of the way remove the alternator, first unplug the factory plug from the back, then unbolt the positive battery lead.
At this point I removed the tension rod and slide bolt assembly.
This allows the alternator to swing all the way out, which will help when you remove the bolt which holds the alternator to the block/bracket. With the bolt removed you can wiggle the alternator back and forth out of its bracket, its a pretty tight fit.
Now with the alternator removed, gently bolt it into a vice and remove the bolt with an impact gun.
Next unbolt the pulley from the water pump/fan drive.
Next I had to clearance the crank pulley by unbolting the radiator and fan to tilt them away from the engine.
This is the tool for removing the crank pulley. If you don’t have one barrow (rent) one like I did from my friend Mark. If you don’t have a friend Mark, then that’s your problem.
Now just select the correct pin size that screws into the end of the tool to lock the pulley in place.
A close up.
OOooh! look at that new pulley, it’s so shiny and aluminum. Side by side comparison of the crank pulley.
Here is the late great Wayde Skutt showing just how impressed he is with the weight difference of the pulleys. Wayde knew nothing of cars but was genuinely impressed with how light the “red one” was.

Same process in reverse, bolt on the new pulley.

Another picture of the same thing.

Here is a finished install photo. Engine bay is looking awfully good. Now to test it out! Let see how much the reduction in weight and adjustments to pulley diameters changes the performance of the engine.
